Kreg Router Table

When I was upgrading to a router table for my shop, I found the decision on which table to buy difficult. Which brand, what features did I need, is it really worth it to upgrade from my homemade table?

As a 20 year plus woodworker, I will try and share some of my experiences and what I found out about router tables.

This post will specifically review the Kreg Router Table. I will look at both the PRS 1040 floor model and PRS 2000 benchtop model.

Kreg Router Table Reviews

Lets start out with the PRS (Precision Router System) 2000 benchtop model.

Is this the right table for you?

This router table is for anyone who is upgrading from their homemade router table, doesn’t have enough space for a floor model or who needs a portable table.

You’ll be happy with it if you’re looking for your first router table or you do the occasional woodworking project.

You’ll love this table if you don’t have the space for a floor model or a lot of your work is at different locations.

This table is not for you if you are a serious woodworker who makes advanced projects like raised panels or other complex projects on a regular basis.

Overview

For anyone who has ever used other Kreg products like their pocket hole system, knows that Kreg makes a quality product. This Kreg router table is no exception.

Its sturdy, yet lightweight steel frame provides an excellent base that helps reduce vibration that leads to a better quality cut.

It has a sturdy fence system that assures the fence is 90 degrees to the table. It also has the capacity to easily convert to a vertical jointer. There’s even a tape measure on top to make small adjustments to the workpiece.

The fence also has a dustport to connect to a shop vacuum. This feature is not common on many portable models.

There are a couple of negatives. The plate does not have multiple insert rings. If you would like to use larger diameter bits, this could be an issue. This is not major, I used a router table without any rings for years and was fine, but you at least need to be aware of this.

The other factor is cost. It does cost more than some other portable tables. But if you believe value is getting what you pay for then you’ll be OK here, because overall this is a really good table for the money.

Conclusion

We have all bought tools based on low price and are disappointed after a few uses. The old saying you get what you pay for applies here.

This table is an excellent portable router table. Yes, more expensive than cheap low end tables, but this is a table you could happily use for the rest of you life.

If you have limited space or need portability, the Kreg PRS 2000 is an excellent choice.

Now lets discuss the Kreg Router Table PRS 1040

Overview

Short of working in a professional wood shop, this table has everything you could ever want in a router table.

I’ve used many different types of tables over the years with both successes and frustrations.

With this table, I haven’t found anything I couldn’t do easily and do well with this table.

The base is sturdy and well constructed. If you’re a little taller than most people you can raise the table by a few inches. After a few hours of routing without bending you will appreciate this feature tremendously.

The top is smooth, thick and rather large. A large table top allows you to place most items on the table without the use of adjustable roller stands. This makes is easier and faster for set up and also safer to use. The thickness will keep the table flat over the years.

The fence moves side to side like a clamp down table saw fence. Not only does this just make everything faster and easier, you know you have the fence perfectly parallel to the miter track. You’ll appreciate this feature next time you’re routing the short end of the board for something like cabinet doors when the ends are perfectly flush.

The insert plate is available in phenolic or aluminum. The phenolic will probably be fine, but I think its only about $20 more for the aluminum. I personally think piece of mind is worth $20, but make your own decision

The plate also has multiple rings to provide minimal clearance for different size bits. If you’ve ever had kickback, you’ll put a very high value on this feature.

Pretty easy to set up as a jointer, also. Takes about 30 seconds.

If you have ever been a hair off of a cut and then over adjusted by bumping the fence you will truly appreciate the micro-adjustment feature that allows you to adjust down to 1/5000th of an inch. Sure is a whole lot better than trial and error.

Negatives

But every item has some reservations. Realize this is a high end table designed for heavy duty use. The price does reflect this. There are many tables that will do simple routing well on occasion. If that’s all you need, you probably don’t need this table.
